The Raven Boys (The Raven cycle #1)

By Maggie Stiefvater

A girl from a family of psychics, four boys from a rich prep school,  a prophecy about kisses and death,  and a missing ancient Welsh king... these are the elements that form the blue print for one of the most fun,  not to meantion strange, tales of friendship and the supernatural.

Blue sargent, despite being from a family of psychics,  has no psychic abilities of her own,  her only gift;  the ability to enhance those of others.
Gansey and his three friends Adam,  Noah and Ronan are on an epic and magical quest- which soon proves to be more dangerous than they thought.
Blue lives with a terrible curse- a prophecy that foretells the death of her true love should she kiss him.
Blue and the raven boys paths cross, and as they search for Glendower, a Welsh king who disappeared centuries ago,  both the prophecy and the quest take on a life of their own.

The story was a little slow to start but by the third chapter I started getting into it and by chapter five the book was glued to my hands.
This books creates a feeling thats somewhere between what you'd experiece reading a paranorma mystery combined with just the right amount of fantasy.  Not only that but the book delves into issues surrounding abuse and poverty, as well as mental health,  all told through the lenses of a dysfunctional (in the best possible way) and eclectic group of friends with their own distinct identities withing the group.

One element of the book is to be commended above all, and that is the incredible friendship between the boys, and later on, Blue. despite the many irritations the individuals may have with one another, the fustrations they may feel towatds anothers behavior, , not to mention their opposing values and beliefes, the boys and Blue stick together no matter what. This book features a compelling romance, but it is the friendship story line that kept me reading.

This book is a relatively quick read,  but be warned,  you'll be hungry for the next book in the series as soon as you turn the last page.
